The Workbench

Humbug Labs makes software in Glasgow, including restaurant systems, maps and browser experiments. Everything here is built and kept running in the same small workshop.

Rota Done

Scheduling that solves itself.

Rota software for hospitality teams. Instead of recording a rota someone already worked out, it works the rota out itself, using a constraint solver behind a plain interface. Around that sits the ordinary machinery of a paid product: accounts, billing, attendance, security audits, a written data-rights process.

FOH Tools

A toolkit for the front of house.

Nine small tools for running a restaurant: allergen matrix, shift briefings, cash-ups, menu costing and engineering, prep lists, rotas, tips, event P&L. Each one does a single job, quickly, on a phone behind a bar.

Howff

Every bothy in Scotland, in your pocket.

A map of Scotland's bothies. It installs like an app, keeps working on a hillside with one bar of signal, and covers the full Mountain Bothies Association network along with the informal shelters.

The Dunts

A home for a Glasgow band.

Website for the Glasgow band The Dunts: releases, live dates, the lot. A static site, quick to load, with nothing in the way of the music.

02 / Experiments

After Hours

Two browser experiments look at the same question from opposite ends: how much can grow from a few small rules?

05

Orrery

A galaxy that remembers.

A living galaxy built from a 32-bit seed. Across 1,400 stars, planets form, grow ecologies and civilisations, and remember what happens to them. Zoom from the galaxy to a generated surface while reversible orbital mechanics keep the system honest.

Primordium

Life from first principles.

Artificial life running on the GPU. Thousands of particles form membranes, hunters and whole ecosystems, with inherited genomes allowing species to split and drift. The World Composer lets you reshape the habitat while it is alive.
